Rust Skins: How Prices Work and Why There Is No Float
Rust has no wear, no patterns and no StatTrak — two copies of a skin are completely identical. So price is driven by supply alone: when the skin left the store, which item it goes on, and how many are in circulation. The mechanics plus practical selling advice.
Short version: the Rust market is simpler than it looks
Anyone arriving in Rust from CS2 starts by looking for the familiar signals: wear, pattern, kill counter. None of them exist here. Two copies of the same Rust skin are completely identical — there is no number separating one from another, no rare colouring, no counter version.
That inverts the whole logic of valuation. In CS2 a large part of the work is figuring out how one particular copy differs from others sharing its name. In Rust that task does not exist at all: the item name describes the product in full.
Exactly one question remains — how many of these skins exist and how many people want them. The entire price in Rust follows from the answer.
The practical consequence: in Rust there is no such thing as a bargain "because of a low float", and no hidden value inside a particular listing. If the same skin costs different amounts on two marketplaces, that is a difference between marketplaces, not between items.
Where skins come from, and why that is the main thing
Rust skins are made by players and submitted to the workshop; the developer picks some of them and puts them in the in-game store. The store works on rotation: the line-up changes, selected items are available for money for a while, then they leave.
That is where the part that matters for price begins. While a skin is in the store, anyone can buy it, and marketplace prices run into the store price — there is no reason to pay more. The moment the skin leaves rotation, no new copies appear: supply is fixed forever and can only shrink.
This is why the "old skin" effect is so pronounced in Rust. An item that stopped being sold several years ago rises not because it became prettier, but because every year some copies settle permanently in the inventories of people who stopped playing.

Which item it goes on — the second biggest factor
In CS2 demand is spread unevenly across weapons, and Rust is the same, only sharper. A skin for something you hold in your hands every session is wanted by many. A skin for a rarely used object is wanted by almost nobody, however good the artwork.
The gap is clearest between weapons and structures. Skins for common guns and armour are the most liquid segment. Skins for boxes, doors and other surroundings sell noticeably worse: they are seen less often, and mostly bought by people who furnish their base thoroughly.
When valuing an unfamiliar Rust skin, look first at the item it goes on, not at the artwork. Good art on an unpopular item is almost always worth less than mediocre art on a common one.
Why calculating profit is easier in Rust
The absence of float and patterns brings an unexpected benefit: comparing prices between marketplaces is more honest here than in CS2.
In CS2 a comparison by name regularly lies — one name hides different wear levels, souvenir and StatTrak versions, and on some skins phases as well. In Rust the item name unambiguously identifies the product, so a price gap between marketplaces really is a price gap and not a product gap.
The practical conclusion: profit arithmetic in Rust comes down to three numbers — the purchase price, the selling marketplace's fee, and actual demand. No adjustment for the condition of a particular copy is needed.
Easy comparison does not remove the main risk, which is liquidity. A skin with no buyers is worth exactly nothing, whatever the asking price on a listing. Before treating a price gap as profit, check that real trades happen on the item rather than offers merely sitting there.
How to sell Rust skins
Split the inventory into common items and everything else — the first group nearly always carries the bulk of the value. For each notable position check trades rather than listing prices: whether the item sells at all, and how often. Decide what matters more, money inside Steam or a withdrawal to the outside; that determines the marketplace and the fee. When posting a listing, aim at the bottom of the existing offers rather than the average: the cheapest one sells first. Sell the small stuff as a bundle or not at all — liquidating cheap skins one by one does not repay the time spent.
The Steam Community Market remains the simplest option: buyers are there, sales go through quickly, but the money stays inside the system.
Third-party marketplaces let you withdraw funds, but they charge a fee and require a working mobile authenticator. On expensive skins that is justified; on cheap ones the fee eats the difference.
