Dota 2 Arcanas and Immortals: Which of Them Actually Sell

The top rarities in Dota 2 are built so that an expensive item and a sellable item are often two different things. We cover how an Arcana differs from an Immortal, why one Arcana can be sold and another cannot, and how to check an item's status before counting on the money.

The key point: rarity and sellability are separate axes

In CS2 any item out of a case can be sold. In Dota 2 that is not true, and this is where newcomers lose money — not on the price, but on the assumption that an expensive item is automatically liquid.

The top of the Dota 2 rarity scale is held by Immortal and Arcana. Both sit above ordinary Mythical and Legendary, both change an item visibly, and both can be expensive. But their sellability depends not on rarity but on how they were obtained — and the same item in two inventories can behave differently.

Before counting a Dota 2 inventory as money, check every top-rarity item for whether it can be sold at all. An item earned through a battle pass or a free promotion usually cannot be traded or listed on a marketplace at all — in an inventory valuation it belongs at zero, not at its shop-window price.

How an Arcana differs from an Immortal

An Arcana is the deepest rework of a hero available in the game. It changes not only the model but the animations, ability effects and sounds, and sometimes adds its own voice lines and counters. Arcanas ship one at a time, are tied to a specific hero, and have no variants: a hero gets one Arcana.

An Immortal is a single-slot equipment item with enhanced effects. Immortals ship in sets alongside major events and treasures, there are many of them, and that is the crucial difference: an Arcana is rare by design, an Immortal is rare only relative to ordinary items.

The consequence for price is direct. Arcanas are few, and each one covers an entire hero — demand for them is concentrated. Immortals from mass treasures were issued in such numbers that many sell for pennies despite the "top" rarity in the description. Rarity sets the ceiling, not the price.

Why one Arcana can be sold and another cannot

This is the most frequent Dota 2 question, and the answer is not yes or no but "it depends where the item came from".

Bought in the store. Such items can usually be gifted or listed, but not immediately: a time restriction applies after purchase — an anti-fraud measure against card chargebacks. While the restriction holds, the item is yours but illiquid.

Pulled from a treasure or received in a trade. Behaves like ordinary merchandise: it sells, it is bought, it takes part in trades. Copies like these are what form the prices you see on marketplaces.

Granted through a battle pass, levels or prestige rewards. As a rule these are never tradable or marketable. Such items exist only in your inventory and are worth exactly as much enjoyment as you get from them.

A free promotional item. Usually non-transferable as well.

Hence a picture that looks odd at first: a name can carry a price on a marketplace while the same item in your inventory cannot be sold. That is not a marketplace error — the copies being traded simply came from other sources.

How to check status before valuing anything

Open the item in your Dota 2 inventory and read the line about trading and selling — that line is the answer, not the rarity in the description. If a time restriction is shown, note the date: until then the item is not money. Find the exact name on a marketplace. A name match does not guarantee a status match, but it gives you the price of the tradable copies. Check how many listings exist at all. Top Dota 2 rarities often show a high price against a handful of trades — that is the price of waiting, not the price of selling. Value the inventory as two numbers: the total, and the total of tradable items only. The gap between them is usually what somebody mistakenly counted as their money.

What this means when buying

If you are buying an Arcana to play with, status does not matter — what matters is whether you like the hero. An Arcana does not wear out, does not date, and does not change visually with patches, so timing is irrelevant.

If you are buying a top rarity as an investment, the same check applies as in any closed category: look at the number of trades, not the sticker price. In our data 91.1% of the rows on any marketplace are offers rather than completed trades, and in thin categories like Arcanas that share decides everything. A high price against three trades a month means you will exit slowly and on somebody else's terms.

Hero popularity deserves a separate thought. An Arcana is tied to one hero, and its demand moves with how often that hero is picked. This is not an exchange-traded asset but a bet on player taste, and it is more honest to call it that.

A working rule for a Dota 2 inventory: separate tradable from non-tradable first, and only then add things up. The order matters more than price accuracy here — an error in price costs you percentages, an error in status costs you the item's whole value.

Is an Arcana always worth more than an Immortal?
Usually yes, but not because of the rarity rule — because of print run and concentrated demand. Immortals from mass treasures were issued in huge numbers and many of them sell for pennies.
Why can't I sell my Arcana?
Most likely it did not come from a market purchase: a battle pass, a prestige reward or a free promotion normally grants a non-transferable item. The other possibility is a recent purchase still inside its time restriction.
Can I gift an Arcana to a friend?
Purchased items can generally be transferred once the restriction expires. Ones granted through a pass or a promotion cannot.
What does an Arcana give besides looks?
It changes the hero's model, animations, ability effects and sounds, and sometimes adds voice lines and counters. It does not affect hero strength.
Is an Arcana worth buying as an investment?
Only with your eyes open. It is a bet that the hero stays popular, and trade counts on top rarities are usually small — exiting the position takes time.
